The community is concerned about recent reports and social media posts about alleged hijackings on Malibongwe Drive off-ramp.
Often the incidents, which include attempted hijackings, nails found in tyres and smash and grabs, are not reported to the police.
A driver recently reported on Facebook that he removed three nails from his tyre on 6 July which appeared to have been stuck together with Prestick.
Spokesperson for Randburg Police Station, Captain Makgowanyana Maja said only one hijacking had been reported to the station. He explained that there was a hijacking of a meter taxi, whereby the victim alleged that he was called to pick up two clients at one of the premises in Randburg and transport them to Northcliff. On their way, one of the so-called clients allegedly pointed a firearm at the driver and ordered him to sit at the back.
They drove back to Randburg and dropped him on the corner of Hill Street and Malibongwe Drive. His valuables were allegedly taken.
Maja commented on the crime reports at the intersection and said, “The proactive measures are in place in the form of patrols day and night. We would like to encourage the victims if they are any incidents of such nature to report to the police.”
Spokesperson for Douglasdale Police Station, Mpho Kgasoane provided the following tips:
- When driving make sure that your windows are closed
- Do not leave valuables on the passenger seat in full view such as cellphones, wallet, laptops and handbags
- Stay focused when driving during the day and night.
