Sophiatown’s wise celebrated at Christ the King Anglican Church

SOPHIATOWN – Seven of Christ the King Anglican Church's members were celebrated on 28 May for their wisdom in age.

For the first time, the historical Sophiatown parish of Christ the King Anglican Church celebrated the old and wise of its congregation.

Church members who turn older than 80 this year were honoured with a special service and a hearty lunch.

Father Raymond Bewsher from Linden was the guest preacher and celebrant at the 28 May celebration.

Walkie Moerane, the church’s marketing and communications manager said the idea to celebrate the members was that of the hospitality department.

“This is the first year we are doing this but it will become an annual event. We want to celebrate our elderly as we are blessed to have them,” she said.

Father Raymond Bewsher with Daphne Motaung and visitor Reverend Nyanisa Rakale wait to receive communion.

Daphne Motaung (81), Joyce Seroke (84), Alice Marshal (82), Caroline Ramela (95), Magdalene Mokgata (98), Reverend Eunice Marubelela (turning 80) and Victor Ntechane (84) were honoured as the congregation’s eldest and, indeed, wisest.

Seroke thanked the church on behalf of the elderly for the celebration. “When we grow older we lose our health, hearing and sight, sometimes we get teased, but people forget that we have a lot of wisdom. We are not always given an opportunity to share, but we thank you for today.

“We are forever grateful that God has spared us and we thank Him every day for a new day.”

Seroke advised younger generations to respect and take care of their elderly. “Spend time with them.”
