Naughty but nice fundraiser at Randburg Bowls Club helps feed cancer patients

BOSKRUIN – Burlesque rains over Randburg Bowls Club in successful fundraiser for the Healthy Active Lifestyle Organisation.

The Healthy Active Lifestyle Organisation (Halo) held a burlesque show to raise funds for its feeding programme.

Susan Elder, founding member of Halo, explained that she has been in the entertainment business for many years and is a dancer.

“Because of this, the organisation decided to put on a comical, tongue in cheek production as the first fundraising show,” said Elder. The audience was in for a night of sequins, corsets, many laughs and blushing husbands, as some of South Africa’s top burlesque performers took to the stage at Randburg Bowls Club on 20 May.

Lucky ticket holders walked home with a souvenir bottle of wine or a hamper.

“We had a full house at the Randburg Bowls Club. The evening was a great success and generously supported by all. A special thanks to event co-ordinator, Wendy Lobz, Wayne Wright, Laurie Stafford, the sound man Franco, all our performers, Smith’s Party Hire for the decor, Otto Kruger for the stage, Shalimar Studio for the lighting, and the security company Gauteng Protection Services (GPS).

“All of them donated their services free of charge to Healthy Active Lifestyle Organisation’s cancer day patients and their caregivers feeding programme in oncology ward 495, Charlotte Maxeke [Johannesburg Academic] Hospital,” Elder added.

Halo is an organisation which runs a Tuesday feeding programme for day patients and their caregivers at oncology ward 495 at the hospital.

The organisation would like to increase the number of days they provide food by including Wednesdays and at a later date on Mondays. Ultimately their wish is to be able to give each patient a small parcel of groceries to take home.

The organisation welcomes volunteers and donations of non-perishable goods.
