UPDATE: Runners to pay their respects to the late Alberts Farm runner

BORDEAX – Randburg Athletics Club to observe a moment's silence for an Alberts Farm runner who died last Saturday.

The Randburg Athletics Club runners are expected to observe a moment’s silence on 21 May ahead of the 10km road race as runners continue to mourn the death of Alberts Farm runner, Deon Ollewagen who collapsed and died during the parkrun event on 13 May.

This footrace is in final preparation for the annual Comrades Marathon, which will be taking place on 4 June.

A close friend, Eloise Lewis-Enright confirmed in a Facebook post that Ollewagen suffered a heart attack 200m from the end of the Alberts Farm parkrun.

Prayers will be held before the run at the Old Parktonian Club where the run is expected to commence. Vreni Werch, one of event organisers, described Ollewagen as a good runner who deserved to be celebrated.

“I was shattered when I received the news about Ollewagen’s passing. He was a member of our club in 2012 and was a good Comrades Marathon runner who always received his silver medal.”
