Thashan Govender, who is in Grade 10 at Curro Aurora, participated in the Streetschool programme, together with youngsters from other schools in Gauteng.
Since 2012 this programme – which is part of the President’s Award – has been directed at teenagers to assist them with personal, leadership and experiential development processes to find meaning in life and to be of value to others. It also helps them to live a life of purpose through experiential volunteer work, supplemented with individual and group coaching.
This year, from 14 to 24 April, Govender took part in a TV documentary with a crew from the Discovery channel.
He joined his peers in recording their journey of personal development through an experiential learning programme in Dharamsala, India.
Govender had the awesome opportunity to work directly with the Tibetan refugee community in Dharamsala, getting involved with community work in an orphanage and schools.
Part of his activities was to share South African culture, engage in teaching English at a basic level through conversational skills with the monks and young adults.
This bright young star has engaged with various people to secure donations to the school in Dharamsala.
Curro Aurora supported Thashan with the donation of various items for the school. He further secured various items of woollen knitted goodies from Booties, Beanies and Blankets for the newborn babies and toddlers in the area.
