Gunmen target a local church in Bloubosrand and stab a couple before fleeing

BLOUBOSRAND – Residents are complaining that crime from Kya Sand is spilling over into their backyards.

Vincent Nkosi woke up to unfamiliar sounds at his door and was surprised by five gunmen who entered his bedroom that he shares with his wife on the property of Christ Bible Church.

The men demanded that he hand over the church’s musical equipment but after several break-ins, the church keeps anything of value off the premises.

Pastor Dick Khoza said Nkosi was stabbed multiple times in the head and hands and was hit on the head with a butt of a gun, while his wife was stabbed with a steel object in her lower back.

Koza added that Nkosi and his wife were taken to Helen Joseph Hospital where Nkosi received more than 10 stitches to his head and his wife received attention for her stab wound.

“Vincent has been discharged from the hospital but he is very traumatized by the incident and we hope that after two months he will be recovered,” said Koza. “Crime in Kya Sands affects us a lot and the church seems to be a target as we have reported three break-ins. We just hope that the police find the culprits.”

He added that police picked up several sets of fingerprints from Nkosi’s room but have not identified the culprits as yet.

Vincent Nkosi was also stabbed on his hands on the night of the incident.

Meanwhile, several Bloubosrand residents who live adjacent to Kya Sands spoke to the Randburg Sun and said they lived in fear of criminals.

Residents Maria Maake and her husband Joseph said they slept with one eye open as criminals targeted them all the time.

“We have had to spend thousands of rand in trying to improve our safety,” said Maria. “I remember the one night we woke up and there were robbers in the yard.”

Maria described how the robbers broke a sliding door with a brick.

“I have made sure that I have installed burglar bars on all my doors but I still often see criminals walking through my back yard and jumping the wall into the house at the back,” she added.

Maria Maake points to where criminals jump over into her yard.

Ward 115 councillor Mathome Mafokwane said he was very concerned about the levels of crime in his area and urged residents to always be alert.

“Residents must work with police in the area to ensure that criminals don’t keep terrorizing the community further,” he said.

Mafokwane said it was worrying that crime was escalating in the area but added that he was continuously working with the Douglasdale police in an attempt to curb criminal activities.

The Douglasdale Police Station spokesperson Captain Mpho Kgasoane was unavailable for comment.
