Metro police spokesperson Superintendent Wayne Minnaar has sent a firm message to motorists ahead of the Easter weekend.
Minnaar warned that motorists found under the influence of alcohol will spend their Easter weekend behind bars.
“Motorists who are found drinking and driving will be locked up for the weekend. This weekend authority will be out throughout the city, including freeways and suburbs,” Minnaar cautioned.
The Easter holidays are infamous for the large contribution to the death toll on South African roads every year.
Minnaar also appealed to motorists to obey traffic lights and other important signs of the road.
“I want to appeal to motorists to be extra cautious on the roads. Drivers must not rush and be reckless and end up driving over a red light. It is important for drivers to obey the lane signals. Motorists must comply with the solid white lines because those lines serve a serious purpose.”
He further advised motorists to be on the lookout for pedestrians.
“Motorists must be mindful that if a pedestrian dies, there’s a standard charge of culpable homicide,” Minnaar warned.
On behalf of President Jacob Zuma, Dr Bongani Ngqulunga appealed to motorists and pedestrians to be cautious over the Easter weekend.
“We would like to appeal to all road users to drive cautiously, take rest intervals when tired, and to not drink and drive. Drivers must also obey the rules of the road and respect other users all the time. We wish to extend the same words of caution to pedestrians, to respect the rules of the road and cross the roads at provided acceptable points.”
