The National bus strike, felt in Joburg by the lack of Rea Vaya and Putco buses, has seen outrage on Twitter by commuters who had to make another, most likely more expensive, plan to get to and from work today. The strike also appears to be affecting plans for South Africans to go home over the Easter break.
The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) and reportedly four other trade unions have informed employers, including Piotrans and Litsamaiso, the bus operating companies that operate Rea Vaya buses, of their intention to strike.
This due to demands of pay increases, paid overtime and paid public holidays said to have not been met by employers.
Numsa said it demands a 15 per cent increase deemed to provide a dignified life for workers.
The union said this morning that the strike is indefinite, with no clear end in sight.
Meanwhile, commuters across the country have been left to make do without their usual mode of transport.
