Corner of Maria and Elise roads flooded, drive cautiously

FONTAINEBLEAU – Following the burst of a water pipe, the corner of Maria Street and Elise Road has become a pond.

A burst water pipe on the corner of Elise Road and Maria Street in Fontainebleau has caused frustration for motorists and pedestrians who have to drive and wade through large quantities of gushing water.

Water runs quickly into an adjacent trench.

On 21 March, water flowed from a large trench on Elise Road which then flowed into another large trench on the adjacent pavement on Maria Street.

According to Ward 104 councillor, Mike Wood, the pipe is old. “For some reason, it looked as if a water pipe may have been hit or burst due to the mammoth amount of water flooding into the street,” said Wood.

Water has been pouring out since yesterday morning.

No workers or Johannesburg Water officials were seen near the flooded road.

Wood said, “I have contacted the Johannesburg Water depot today. Presently, the water, according to residents, is still leaking.”

Motorists and pedestrians are confronted with huge quantities of water.

The area around Maria Street is covered in excavation and trenches.

An enormous trench pumps water onto the road.

Questions were sent to Johannesburg Water and as soon as more information is received, an update will be made available.
