Avid Randburg Sun reader celebrates her 95th birthday

BLAIRGOWRIE – Here's wishing one of our special readers a very special birthday...

BLAIRGOWRIE – May Bartman will celebrate her 95th birthday on 18 March and after raising three sons, outliving two husbands and being a proud grandmother to seven grandchildren, she still continues to live life to the fullest.

Born in 1922 in Durban, Bartman lived most of her life there and after her husband died she moved to Blairgowrie to be closer to her son and daughter-in-law, Len and Olivia Humphries.

“My mother is an avid Randburg Sun reader and every week [she] looks out for it. She also loves sports and enjoys watching cricket,” Len said.

He explained that his mother was fully cognisant, even with a slight hearing problem, and lived at Ekklesia Park Old Age Home in Blairgowrie.

For most of her adult life, Bartman worked as a volunteer aid at Addington Red Cross Hospital in Durban.

“For 25 years I worked very hard as a first aid volunteer. I really enjoy eating my breakfast every day,” she added excitedly.

Her daughter-in-law pointed out that her mother-in-law was a delightful person to be around and that she enjoyed looking after her because it made her feel closer to her own mother who was being cared for in the south of Wales.

“May is an expert seamstress and no one knows more about the needle than she does. She enjoys reading and keeps up to date with the news,” the proud daughter-in-law said.

The one lesson, among many others, which Len said he had learned from his mother was honesty. “My mother taught us to be honest and to appreciate working hard,” Len added.

The proud son also remembers how his mother would get dressed up to attend evening balls with his father.

Bartman will spend the day with her friends and enjoy lunch with them to celebrate 95 years of her life.
