Smoke points to factory fire

Strijdom Park – QRS ambulance service investigates a source of smoke and discovers a factory fire.

Quick Response Service (QRS) ambulance services were the first on scene at a factory fire early this morning.

Media liaison officer for QRS, Braden Stephenson, said their dispatch team had noticed the smoke, which they first confused as mist, from their office window.

An ambulance crew then investigated the source of the smoke, which turned out to be a printing factory whose expo room was on fire.

The crew called for backup, around 2am on 17 March, and the fire department arrived in a large force.

Members of the department cut their way into the building and opened up the roof to create ventilation.

Stephenson explained that initially there was some confusion as to whether a security guard was in the factory or not and the fire department went in to investigate.

Fortunately, the security guard had not been in the building and no one sustained any injuries.

The source of the fire is unknown at this stage.
