Power cheaper with new meters

JOBURG – The roll-out of new prepaid meters will only affect residents who currently have prepaid meters or smart meters.

City Power’s roll-out of new prepaid meters across more than 20 000 households will not affect postpaid meters, the utility confirmed this week.

It will only affect prepaid meters, including smart meters and no charges will be made to these users.

The new prepaid meters apparently have improved communication capacity and features and will be installed by contracted companies, Voltex, Actom and Landis+Gyr over the next three months.

City Power said electricity would be cheaper with the new meters because the system did not include additional charges a post-paid meter would impose, such as service and network access charges.

“For a prepaid meter, you only pay for what you consume. Customers can manage their electricity consumption and avoid billing estimations.”

If you do not have a prepaid meter but wish to install one, you can apply for it and be quoted on single or three-phase and whether you have a smart meter or an old postpaid meter.

The costs include:

City Power also does not allow residents to install prepaid meters themselves.

Installation is the prerogative and competence that lies solely with City Power.
