The increase in car hijackings in the Honeydew policing precinct saw police join forces with the Gauteng Provincial Community Safety Department to raise awareness about the scourge.
Honeydew police spokesperson, Captain Balan Mutha together with Colonel Mack Mngomezulu, the provincial corporate communications officer, teamed up with Nonhlanhla Maisha from the safety department to exhibit crime prevention tips and to register service delivery complainants within the police at Randridge Mall on 2 March.
Mngomezulu elaborated on the initiative, “It’s a normal exhibition as well as a crime awareness [initiative] to advise patrons about their safety at malls and shopping centres before departing the centre.”
It has been established that most hijackings occur after a victim has been followed from of a shopping centre.
“[It is crucial] to stay observant of your surroundings and important when driving around to regularly check that you are not being followed,” Mngomezulu warned.”If you suspect you’re being followed, rather pass your home and drive straight to a police station or quickly call 10111 and alert the police.”
