MUST READ: Gautrain to expand its rail network to Lanseria

JOBURG – A feasibility study concludes that the extension of the Gautrain rail network will provide significant economic and transport related benefits.

JOBURG – Gautrain is planning to expand its rail network to Lanseria Airport and other areas in the province following the completion of a feasibility study.

The study which was done by Gauteng Management Agency identified the main links and stations of the Gautrain rail network.

According to the MEC for Road and Transport Dr Ishmael Vadi, the expansion project is expected to be split into five phases due to its magnitude and complexity.

The new rail network will include a link from Jabulani to Cosmo City and Samrand to Mamelodi with stations in Roodepoort, Little Falls, Fourways, Sunninghill, Olievenhoutsbosch, Irene, Tshwane East and Hazeldean.

Gautrain showed a positive impact on the provincial economy and alleviated traffic congestion since its inception, said Vadi. “These benefits illustrate the need for rail as being the backbone of public transport in our province. Due to growing ridership and peak hour passenger demand, 12 new train sets are required.”

Vadi said the system had generated strong demand for the expansion of the Gautrain rail system.

“The feasibility study report supports the principle of an extension of the Gautrain rail network. The Gauteng provincial government is aware that a project of this magnitude will require significant funding from various sources. In order to address affordability issues, an engagement with the national government is required. This will be facilitated by the national Department of Transport,” he said.
