Pop-up store for the homeless coming soon

FERNDALE – Hope for the Homeless will host a pop-up store and all clothing donations are welcome.

FERNDALE – As winter approaches Hope for the Homeless is aiming to make the lives of displaced people a little bit easier by hosting a pop-up street store.

Co-founder of Hope for the Homeless, Trevor Webster said the street store would take place on 11 March at the Ferndale Bible Chapel.

“The purpose of the street store is to give people in need an opportunity to select clothing, at no cost to themselves, and in a way that restores their dignity,” he said.

Webster pointed out that donated clothes would be displayed on hangers and tables staffed by volunteers, where each shopper would be welcomed at the entrance by a store assistant and guided through the store to select their items.

“All clothing donations are most welcome, especially men’s clothing where the need is the greatest. We would also be most grateful for donations of carrier bags for our shoppers,” he added.

Webster said the concept of a pop-up street store was established in Cape Town in 2014 and has become a worldwide phenomenon.

“It is the world’s first rent-free, premises-free, free pop-up clothing store for the homeless, located on the street and stocked by donations, and 11 March marks the world’s 569th street store, which takes place from 10am to 2pm and will be located on the corner of Dover Street and York Avenue in Ferndale.”

Hope for the Homeless is a faith-based non-profit organisation working alongside churches, businesses and other organisations, with the chief purpose of coordinating initiatives aimed at showing compassion to and uplifting the lives of people in need.
