LINDEN – Police warned residents to be more vigilant following a spate of robberies at residential homes by suspects who were usually armed.
Linden Police Station spokesperson Captain Walter Spencer warned that incidents of robberies in residential areas were escalating in the precinct. He said this was due to residents who don’t use security systems appropriately and at some stage leave their doors open and ignore suspicious people.

According to police reports, about three incidents were reported over the weekend from 18 to 19 February where suspects took items such as jewellery, television sets and clothes.
Some of the residents were robbed at gunpoint by about two to five armed suspects with gloves and balaclavas.
“They jump the wall at one house and went through an open patio door at about 8pm. In another incident, robbers [gained access] with a digipad code into complex, broke open one unit door and overpowered the house owners,” he said.

He said suspects fled in a resident’s vehicle in Ferndale; and in Victory Park, about two suspects were picked up by a vehicle which they allegedly called after committing a robbery.
Captain Spencer advised residents to get a GSM module on their alarm systems. “It is a cell with a sim card of your choice and it is independent from security companies – when your alarm goes off it SMSes people of your choice who can call police or the security control room. It also then, sort of forces you to interact on a reaction basis with your neighbour,” he said.
