HONEYDEW – The final round of the fifth annual Allen Lewis-Williams Memorial tournament took place at Honeydew Bowling Club.
Honeydew Bowling Club was delighted to see its popular club president John George and his wife Brigitta take top honours over Lex Morton and Nadine Pottow of Ruimsig Country Club in second place, and Mike Zondagh and Sandra Viljoen, also from Ruimsig, in third place.
There were winners aplenty with 12 raffles on offer and with substantial cash and other competition prizes going all the way down to 9th spot.
This mixed pairs format tournament takes place every February over three consecutive Friday afternoons with clubs in both the Sables and Johannesburg Bowling Association invited to participate. The event culminated in a braai where competitors celebrated their bragging rights, bemoaned chances missed, and enjoyed music and festivities well into the night.
Club member Joss Lewis-Williams of Efore Electrical sponsors the tournament together with Terry van Acker of The Ribbon Collection, in memory of Lewis-Williams’ late brother, Allen, also a valued former member, who passed away in 2011.
“This tournament is getting such a reputation that it is fast becoming one of the best in the district,” said event founder, Lewis-Williams. “We now have waiting lists as the field fills up so quickly after the entry list goes up.”
A R3 500 cheque from raffle proceeds was also handed over to the SA Guide-Dogs Association in memory of Allen, who championed causes for the blind through his own initiative of placing a collection jar at the bar in aid of the Blind Bowlers Association.
