VICTORY PARK – Schoolchildren from Crossroads School collected food and an assortment of pet products to donate to the Randburg SPCA.
The annual initiative is meant to teach the children to care for animals and other people. A few of the children from the school’s Grade 7 class spent a few hours at the animal shelter where they gifted the organisation with collected donations.

Food, blankets, bedding, cat toys and a travel basket for cats were collected between 23 January and 10 February.
Principal of the school, Carolyn West said, “What the learners loved the most about the experience was the interaction they had with the animals. They also enjoyed the reward of a merit or star when they brought in food or other things for the animals.”

She added that the schoolchildren received recognition for their efforts at line-up and assembly. At the SPCA, they were educated on how to care for others in the community and to look out for animals who were lost, as they are helpless and need people to look after them.
“The school carries on the initiative because the children feel passionately for the animals and this was a good way for them to learn about helping others and caring for the community. The SPCA relies on public donations to continue to help animals and so we carry on supporting them.”

Some of the schoolchildren were able to hold some of cats and kittens and visited the dogs and puppies. “They also saw the farm animals that the SPCA has – a cow and some goats.”
