The sight of produce and stock left to rot on the shelves was not one for weak stomachs.
The community has been up in arms at the large amount of waste accumulating in the store, with no stock permitted to leave the premise since the store shutdown.
As a result, tons of food, produce and stock was left to waste away.

Many community members were baffled that the stock was not donated to those in need.Black bags have now been seen outside the store awaiting collection.

Owner of the premises, Stelios Ioannou said, “We are waiting for the skip and for the amount it is going to cost to remove the refuse. The store is far from being sanitary or clean, but progress is being made. The shop is not open for business.”

Although Ioannou understands that a lot of the stock could have been donated to charity she said, “I am not allowed to remove anything from the property. I would love to donate some of the items that have not been contaminated and have kept them separate, but until I get permission, my hands are tied.”
A representative of the liquidators was contacted by the Randburg Sun, however, comment from the liquidators or Spar head office was not received before time of publication.
