A coffin but no body

BROMHOF – Find out what was found on the side of the road in Bromhof.

An abandoned second-hand coffin was taken to Honeydew Police Station by police officers after it was found close to the road in Bromhof on 31 January.

The used brown and dusty casket was discovered by the officers while conducting patrols on the corner of Hawken Avenue and Steenloper Street.

Although they found nothing inside, the casket was taken to the police station for further inspection.

It is still unclear whether the casket was dug out of a grave or used to smuggle illegal goods. However, a leading funeral service provider, Doves, conducted an analysis of the casket and said it was not dug out of a grave.

Donivon Esterhuizen of Doves said, “There was no indication of sand or rot in the coffin’s surrounding.”

He added that some people bought and kept coffins in their homes.

“It has happened that people purchase and keep the coffin as a wish to use later. They normally store the coffins in the ceiling or somewhere around the house,” said Esterhuizen.

Spokesperson for Honeydew Police Station, Captain Balan Muthan said, “The casket without a body will be destroyed.”
