New leaders for Sharonlea Primary School

SHARONLEA – The head boy and head girl of Sharonlea Primary School promise not to boss their peers around.

A special assembly was held to introduce the new leaders of Sharonlea Primary School on 23 January.

In true democratic style, the 20 Grade 7 leaders were chosen and voted for by their peers and teachers in December last year.

Jocelyn McCrea, who teaches physical education and life orientation and is also in charge of the leaders, said the youngsters all displayed good academic and sports performances, behaviour and leadership. “The duties of the elected leaders include overseeing the sports field in the morning at break time, the lines and escorting parents who attend events at the school,” McCrea said.

She explained that the leaders were inaugurated at the special assembly and formally introduced to the school.

Principal of the school, Carla Hercules, said the youngsters would lead their peers by example and also inspire them. “Our new leaders, thus far, are some of the best leaders chosen, and we are very proud of them and wish them the best.”

Head girl, Theresa Moses said she was very happy to have been chosen, especially because she was supposed to leave the school after Grade 4, but the love and support she received from the school kept her there.

“I will be the leader who leads by example and not boss the other children around,” Moses said.

Head boy, Katlego Mokgosi explained that he was very happy to have been voted as a leader by his peers and promised that he, too, would refrain from being a bossy leader.

“Together with my fellow leaders we will have a meeting with the principal and teachers and talk about how we can make the school a better place for all at Sharonlea Primary School,” Mokgosi said.
