Are informal traders needed?

MALANSHOF – Informal traders offer different kinds of services. The Randburg Sun asked residents why they chose to use the services of informal traders.

With the unemployment rate in South Africa reaching record highs, many citizens do what they can to make a living such as being an informal trader. Informal traders come in all shapes and sizes, some sell food, some sell sweets and cigarettes. Many people also use the services of informal traders. Randburg Sun spent several hours asking residents why they used the services of informal traders.

BONGANE HOMA: I usually buy pap and steak, chicken or beef stew. I find the informal traders’ food delicious. They are hygienic and very clean. I hope that they do not get moved elsewhere because I will be affected.
SOLLY MOYO: I am happy to buy from informal traders because they are close to where I work. I enjoy their pap and meat plates. Other places are too far for me to go there.
MOHALE SHAI: My mom was an informal trader and I think that they should be allowed to sell where their customers are. Moving them to the Johannesburg CBD is taking them away from their target market.
GERALDINE HELME: Buying from informal traders is much cheaper than elsewhere. I enjoy their bunny chow, chips and pap plates because this kind of food is not easy to find. It is better that they are close by because I work close by.
ITUMELENG PATANE: I am a taxi driver and I don’t have a lot of time so the informal traders are more convenient.
