New police recruits to focus on farm murders

MULDERSDRIFT – New constables to assist in combating farm attacks and increase police visibility.

Mysterious farm attacks have led to murder cases in the Muldersdrift area and the police – after appointing new recruits – are planning to eradicate the scourge.

Warrant Officer Masedi Masedi, spokesperson for the Muldersdrift Police Station, said 13 newly appointed constables will, from 19 January, be placed in the crime prevention unit and focus on beefing up police visibility in hotspot areas. “The new officers will be placed in the crime prevention unit. The motive is to beef up police visibility thereby assisting in eradicating farm attacks,” said Masedi, adding that the acting station commander Captain Buti Phiri was pleased.

According to an investigation, most farm attacks are said to stem from angry farm workers who are unhappy with the way they are treated at work. The ambush becomes very easy because the worker is aware of every corner of the property.

However, Masedi believes more manpower means more police presence and swift reaction. “Due to the increase in policemen at the station, we will be able to reach those areas that contribute a lot of crime in the precinct, on time,” Masedi added.
