HONEYDEW – Honeydew Bowling Club aims to grow the sport of bowls.

The Honeydew Bowling Club is open to any member of the public who aspires to learn and play bowls.

Members of the club held their Christmas lunch on 4 December to celebrate their progress throughout the year. Players were entertained by the Bluez Line Band while enjoying their lunch.

The club’s president John George, who was elected to his position in August, said it was a privilege and an honour to work with the club’s committee which was dedicated to the sport.

He said from next year January, they would start to visit local schools and convince them to offer bowls as a sport. “This is the sport for all from young children to older people,” he said

The club hosts annual tournaments and also competes in the Sables League. They also host internal competitions for club members and also annual competitions against other clubs.

The club’s competition secretary Mary-Ann Dummer said they were endorsing the initiative of Bowls South Africa to grow the sport throughout the country. “This is the cheapest and healthiest sport you can play for the duration of your life,” she said.

The club will also host the national mixed pairs competition in June next year. “It is an honour for us to be selected by Bowls South Africa to host this national tournament,” said Dummer.

The club will host an open day on 22 January next year and will register people who are interested in lawn bowls. The club will supply bowling balls and free coaching to welcome new members. Every person who is interested will be required to pay R30.

The club’s entertainment manager, Orla Guilfoyle said they would like everyone to join the open day and learn bowls while having fun. “We will also like that huge vibe in our club where we also play Friday league,” she said.
