Two legs ride for four legs

NORTHRIDING – Young cyclist Travis Smit participates in the Telkom 947 Cycle Challenge to collect cat and dog food for Randburg SPCA.

Combining his passion for cycling and his love for animals, Travis Smit, who is currently in Grade 6 at Trinityhouse High School in Randpark Ridge, collected and donated more than 100 bags of pet food to Randburg SPCA.

Smit recently took part in the Telkom 947 Cycle Challenge and decided that he wanted to make it a special race.

“I love animals and I also love cycling so I thought I would combine the two together,” Smit said.

The owner of two dogs, Smit tackled the cycle challenge for the third time this year and shaved 20 minutes off his previous time.

Smit explained that he created awareness about his dog and cat food drive via word of mouth as well as Facebook. “Some people dropped off food at my house in Randpark Ridge and other food [items’] my mom Debbie had to collect.”

Randburg SPCA’s manager, Craig Rudman thanked Smit for the donation and said that the organisation is grateful for each and every donation.
