Randburg Horticultural Society breakfast

BLAIRGOWRIE – The Randburg Horticulture Society holds its annual breakfast in a bid to raise funds for charities.

The Randburg Horticulture Society held its annual breakfast on 9 November, where a guest speaker enlightened the audience about Delta Park in Blairgowrie.
The breakfast was held inside the environment function room where over 100 members of the society gathered to listen to Shirley Tebbutt on her experiences in the Delta.
Former chairperson of the society, Elizabeth Macey said that the breakfast was held annually as a fun event for members. She explained that the club has been in existence for over 40 years and that it was mainly a garden club, which held bi-weekly meetings.

The main objective of the breakfast, Macey said was to raise funds for the different charities they fundraise for throughout the year.
“Every year the club raises between eight and R10 000 throughout the year and this money is split between the different charities we canvass for every year at our annual general meeting in June,” Macey said. She pointed out that as a fundraiser, the committee sold raffle tickets and also sourced prizes for the winners.
Tebbutt began walking her dogs in 1975 and said, “In 1982 – as I was walking my dog, with a friend – I noticed that the top dam was covered with hyacinths and we both decided that we would do something about it – despite our lack of money,” she explained.

The next day, Tebbutt and her friend hired five workers to help them clear the dam. “Eventually we learned how to pull out the hyacinths by using a boat.

Every time anyone asked us what we were doing, we’d ask them to donate to our cause and this led to us collecting money and lunches for the workers,” Macey said.

She added that since then she has been involved in removing alien plants from the park and up until today, she continues to be involved in cleaning projects at the park.
