MUST READ: Robbery suspect burnt to death by angry mob

ZANDSPRUIT - Man murdered by community in apparent mob justice attack.

ZANDSPRUIT – A man who was suspected of being involved in a string of house break-ins and robberies in Zandspruit Informal Settlement was burnt to death this morning (7 November).

According to Honeydew police spokesperson, Captain Balan Muthan, the police were called to the settlement at 5.10am. Upon arrival, the police found that the man was burnt by the community and had succumbed to the critical head injuries which he sustained during the incident.

“We are investigating a case of murder and only the investigations will reveal if the man was necklaced or not,” he said.

He explained that the police were appealing to any members of the public who might have information to assist with investigations. The man was allegedly attacked by an unknown number of residents.

One of the community leaders who would not be named for fear of victimisation, said residents were deceived to believe that the victim was involved in the incidents.

He alleged that six men initially attacked two men and called for community residents to get involved in the act. “I heard that it was a brawl about groups involved in illegal connections,” he explained.

While the victim was being attacked by the community members, the other man got away, leaving the victim to be burnt and killed by the residents.
