The country’s most stressful jobs

JOBURG–Pharma Dynamics conducted a survey to determine the most stressful jobs in South Africa, with surprising results.

Has having a bad day at work become a regular feature in your week? According to a recent survey, work-related stress causes major depression, burnout and anxiety; which attributes to more than 40 percent of all work-related illnesses experienced by people in the workplace.

When selecting a career path, did you ever think it may be considered one of the most stressful jobs in South Africa? The truth of the matter is, every profession has its own set of challenges and may be more stressful than we are aware of.

The Pharma Dynamics survey reveals that these conditions result in a loss of earnings every year estimated at R 40.6 billion. There is a lot of money to be lost by working in a stress-inducing profession, with a proven record on the negative effects on your mental and physical health.

Pharma Dynamics measured job-related stress based on a number of elements that account to what the demands of the job entail and the effects they have. Some of these include meeting deadlines, the amount of working hours, the risks, travelling requirements, physical and mental demands.

Based on these findings, it would be a good idea to think long and hard before working in an industry that is considered one of the most stressful jobs in South Africa.

According to Pharma Dynamics spokesperson Mariska van Aswegen, these professions are considered the most stressful jobs:

  •  Pilot
  •  Hairdresser
  •  Farmer
  • Film director
  •  Nurse
  •  Police officer
  •  Corporate Executive
  •  CEO
  •  Doctor
  •  Singer

So the next time you feel you’re on the verge of resigning from your profession, remember a hairstylist and a singer probably experience more work-stress than you.
