Johannesburg’s biggest water wasters

Research reveals the households in Johannesburg that use the largest amounts of water.

With the worst drought South Africa has seen in the last 30 years, strict water restrictions have been put in place throughout the country.

However, there are still areas that are using large amounts of water despite the restrictions.

According to an article by the Mail&Guardian, in Johannesburg specifically, the areas that use the most water per month are:

  •  Diepkloof (366 935 kl)
  •  Far East Bank (214 820 kl)
  •  Alexandra (172 563 kl)
  • Houghton Estate (124 527 kl)
  •  Dainfern (101 311 kl)

The article further stated the biggest household water users live in Waterval, Midrand, where each property uses about 159 000 litres a month.

Witpoort has the second biggest household users with 111 000 litres a month, with Westcliff using 96000 litres.

Parktown homes average 90 000 litres, and North Riding residents use 87 000 litres a month.

Households using more than 20 000 litres a month now face penalties.

With the Vaal River at its lowest level in history, the department of water affairs warns everyone to use water sparingly and the City says its working on reducing water consumption in the top 30 usage areas, which, include Dunkeld, Hyde Park, Westcliff and Athol.
