Bowls for cancer

BOSKRUIN – Randburg Bowling Club contributed about R25 000 to local cancer charity organisations.

Pancreatic cancer survivor, Susan Elder acknowledged the Randburg Bowling Club’s initiative to help cancer organisations through sport.

The team raised about R25 000 during the inaugural Bowls for Cancer competition held in Boskruin on 28 October. These funds were donated to two cancer charities, Cupcakes 4 Kids with Cancer and CanSurvive, which received R12 500 each. In the bowls competition, each participating team had to comprise at least one member who was either a cancer survivor or a fighter.

Elder, a CanSurvive member, has been clear from the diagnosis for about eight years and could only thank the club for its positive contribution. “This was an amazing day and the support from the club is wonderful,” she said.

She added that early detection was a key aspect to survive the disease. “Know your body and if anything is wrong, please do the check-ups.”

Elder is adamant that staying positive got her through the journey of diagnosis and survival.

Terry Turner of the club said they would continue supporting cancer organisations. “We are raising funds to support charity organisations. This is one of our efforts to give back to the community,” she said.

She added that the club wanted to give back the little they could.
