ANC causes chaos at City council meeting

JOBURG – The DA said the ANC cannot accept defeat after the municipal elections and is, instead, causing chaos in council meetings.

The City of Johannesburg’s speaker, Vasco da Gama said the African National Congress (ANC) disrupted the council sitting on 27 October numerous times, with the meeting only ending just before 9pm.

The meeting, held on the last Thursday of every month, was supposed to start at 10am, but only found traction much later. “Some of the items on the agenda were not attended to because they had to be withdrawn to conduct more investigations. But we did get to the rest of the items although some of them were controversial,” Da Gama said.

The speaker said the Section 97 oversight committees were established, negotiations to utilise land in Kelvin for housing started, and the City’s new manager, Dr Ndivho Lukhwareni was approved by council. “We had to get through all the items,” Da Gama said.

The City’s meeting was one of many disruptions across the country in, what the Democratic Alliance (DA) is calling, an attempt to make councils ungovernable.

The DA’s provincial leader, John Moodey said the ANC seemingly could not accept its electoral defeat at the hands of the party in the major metros and is now causing chaos. “We are expecting to have more and more unrest towards the 2019 elections,” he said.

The ANC’s Joburg region spokesperson, Jolidee Matongo said the party would release a statement soon.
