UPDATE: Police will monitor ‘rape corner’

SUNDOWNER – Honeydew police urge residents to refrain from listening to music through earphones while walking in the streets.

Honeydew police insisted that they would deploy more resources on the corner of Olivenhout Avenue and Drysdale Road if the crime problem persists.

It was established that most people, especially women, walk around with their earphones, listening to music. This has created an opportunity for criminals who are allegedly terrorising residents at this corner, which was dubbed ‘rape corner’ by some.

Police spokesperson, Captain Bulan Muthan warned residents to be more vigilant while walking at night and in the early hours of the morning. He said they would increase patrols in the area in an effort to curb this scourge.

“When people are listening to the music it diverts their focus from what is happening along the streets and this contributes massively to the incidents of street robberies.

“We urge residents to be more vigilant and refrain from exposing their items while walking on the streets.”
