UPDATE: Mcebo Dlamini remanded in custody

BRAAMFONTEIN - Former Wits SRC president Mcebo Dlamini will spend another night behind bars as police confirm his address before he makes a formal bail application.

 

Former Wits SRC president, Mcebo Dlamini has been remanded in custody while police verify his address.

He appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on 17 October where he is facing several charges.

 

The State announced that he has been charged with three counts all related to the #FeesMustFall protests that erupted and have been ongoing at Wits University since 19 September. He is charged with public violence, possession of a dangerous weapon and theft. Dlamini will appear in court on 18 October for a formal bail hearing.

He was arrested in the early hours of 16 October at Wits University’s student residence in Braamfontein and taken to Cleveland Police Station. Student leaders of the protest, Busisiwe Seabe and Fasiah Hassan have accused the police of targeting the leaders of the protest in a bid to quell it.
