With the current water restrictions in place, many residents want to save water but do not know how. The City of Johannesburg recently announced that high rates of water consumption have led to the municipality having to implement water shedding as residents are not water wise.
Water shedding means that residents can expect low to no water coming out of their taps but here are some tips to use water wisely:
- Ensure that all the pipes around the home are plugged as leaks can be a big contributor to water waste
- Turn off the tap when you brush your teeth or wash your hands
- Water your garden with a watering can rather than a hosepipe
- Do not use a hosepipe to clean the driveway or wash a car. For the pavement, a good old fashion broom with hard bristles should do and rather use a bucket of water to wash the car
- Wash vegetables and fruits in a bowl rather than under a running tap
- Re-use water left from cooking to water the plants
- Cut all invasive plant species as they consume a lot of water. Try succulent plants as they require less water
- Wash your pets outdoors, in an area of your lawn that needs water.
- Do not fill up the bath tub, only use enough to bath
- Avoid flushing the toilet unnecessarily. Rather throw tissue paper into the dustbin as this will prevent you from flushing
- Report any water leaks to Johannesburg so that they are repaired timeously.
