‘Great, I’ve been disconnected’

JOBURG - What you need to know:

You get home after a long day at work, and traffic, and you need a good cup of coffee. You turn the tap to fill the kettle, but oh, no water.

You know your neighbour has water, their sprinkler blasted away as you drove past – do they know about the level-2 water restrictions?

It must be, oh the agony, you have been disconnected.

According to the City of Johannesburg, accounts with a debt older than 30 days, will receive a final demand notice as well as a courteous call by a credit controller.

“Customers will be informed of the overdue debt and the risk involved should the account not be paid in full or an arrangement made to pay off the outstanding debt.

“If no payment is received after 14 days of the warning notice being posted, Johannesburg Water (JW) may:

a) Restrict the flow of water for domestic use.

b) Disconnect the water supply to businesses.”

Johannesburg Water, the City of Johannesburg’s water entity would like you to know something about disconnections.

Anthony Still, The newly elected MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services Department said while every effort is made to reconnect service in the shortest possible time after credit control action, residents should allow for up to 48 hours for a reconnection request to be actioned.

Any such attempts should be reported immediately.

The MMC said that JW’s technicians and those of its approved service providers are not authorized to enter into any negotiations with residents. He said therefore residents should never offer or entertain any offers of payment to stop or delay a disconnection.

JW’s technicians and those of our approved service providers are not authorized to remove meters from residents’ property during a disconnection. Again any attempts to do this should be reported.

“It should be noted that payment at a City Revenue Centre will reflect on the system sooner than the alternative pay points available.”

So whether you paid your bills or not, to inquire call the City’s account inquiries department on 0860 562 874 or 011 375 5555.
