Metro Police clean touts from Civic Centre

RANDBURG CBD – Giving personal documents and addresses to touts could have dangerous consequences.

Johannesburg Metro Police embarked on a robust campaign to rid the Randburg Civic Centre parking lot of illegal security guards – ‘touts’.

Metro police and Randburg police began operations to sweep out these touts from Monday, 4 October, to ensure the safety of residents and motorists.

Touts are accused of deceiving motorists and residents claiming that they would ensure swift municipal transactions for a fee. Metro police also established that residents were trusting touts with their personal documents and addresses, which in return could be used against residents for criminal activities. The police say they will continue this operation until touts are no longer operating at the centre.

Chief Superintendent Johannes Sebola of Metro Police warned motorists, especially those renewing licences and paying traffic fines, to refrain from doing any transactions at the parking lot with touts.

“They shouldn’t allow these people to deceive them and tell them that they can help them within 15 minutes,” Sebola said.

Metro police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar warned that members of the public should not trust strangers. “They must not risk giving identity documentation and addresses to a tout as it could have dangerous consequences,” he said.
