UPDATE: Waiter shot during armed robbery is recovering

RANDPARK RIDGE – Police are investigating a business robbery and attempted murder after a waiter was shot.

It took armed men only two minutes to take an undisclosed amount of cash from a cashier during an armed robbery on Friday evening, 23 September, at Lone Wolf Spur.

The three men allegedly fired three random shots to intimidate the customers and workers at the restaurant in Randpark Ridge at around 9.25pm. They initially posed as customers when they entered the restaurant and subsequently took the cash from the till. A waiter was nicked in the shoulder by one of the shots that were fired. He is recovering and did not require surgery. The restaurant’s senior manager, Jerry Sithole said that the robbers also took a cellphone from another waiter.

“Only the waiter was shot trying to run away, as he had no idea of what was happening. The incident happened so fast, they were in and out in less than two minutes,” he said.

Police confirmed the armed men were travelling in a Blue double cab Toyota Hilux.

Honeydew cluster standby spokesperson, Captain Walter Spencer said they were investigating a business robbery and attempted murder. “Three armed men fired random shots and fled with cash,” he said.

Meanwhile in a letter addressed to the Randpark Ridge Community Facebook page, the store owner, Chris Marks said the incident was the first since they took over the store in 2006 and, hopefully the last.

“While I do not wish to publicise all our security measures, I can assure all of you that we have armed response, drop safes, panic buttons, car guards and more. We will obviously review all our security procedures and solicit expert advice on where we can improve,” the post read.

It further elaborated that there was nothing more important to them than the safety of the customers, staff and precious children who visit the restaurant daily.

“Nothing we do will completely make us, or any other establishment, completely crime proof. Luckily, the injured waiter did not require surgery and he is recovering very well. It is very clear to me that this community (Randpark Ridge) is resilient and strong.”
