Wow, these girls are smart!

BLAIRGOWRIE – IR Griffith pupils bravely take on the Nickelodeon Kid Genius Competitions.

Grade 7 pupils from IR Griffith Primary School took part in the Nickelodeon Kid Genius Competition – and won!

Bonolo Muvunyi decided to invite her two best friends, Shanna Henderson and Divaksha Naidu to enter on this amazing journey with her. “The experience was eye-opening for us as we got to do things we had never dreamed of doing, such as robots, coding, biokinetics and different types of experiments,” said Muvunyi.

She explained that seeing the competitors gave them a reason to lose all hope, but that they still had a little bit of faith. Naidu said, “They looked intimidating, but were no match for us.”

The first round went well when the pupils had to compete to make it into the top 16 to qualify, they succeeded and even managed to obtain the third-highest score. The second round – according to the girls – was a breeze. It was in the third round that they competed against Grade 11 pupils from Rand Park High School.

After eight difficult questions, the teams were at a tie. To break that tie the final question was, “What is the imaginary line that separates the earth into the northern and southern hemispheres?”

The final round saw the pupils competing against Grade 6s, which to them wasn’t really a challenge. And just like that, the team from IR Griffith had won the competition. They won R50 000 to share among themselves and R10 000 worth of Cambridge textbooks for their school.

The girls wished to thank their principal, Margarita Lopes and Grade 7 facilitator, Liezl Ferreira for all their support, as well as their friends and family.
