1st Khayalami Girl Guides awards their leaders with badges after they work hard and show leadership skills.

Three girls from 1st Khayalami Girl Guide group in North Riding have recently attained the highest accolades possible in their respective age groups as members of Girl Guides South Africa.

Ashleigh Collyer and Palesa Faith Mphatja recently obtained their Golden Hand badges in the Brownie programme with Naledi Zungu attaining her Honey Pot badge in the Teddy Programme.

Diana Chigumba from the Khayalami Girl Guide group said that to gain the badges the girls worked through a series of tests and completed badges called adventures, through four levels. “The badge work is done during meetings on Friday evenings, but to gain the highest awards extra effort has to be put in by the girls at home and over holidays,” Chigumba added.

She pointed out that both Collyer and Mphatja were leaders of a small group of girls called a Six, and they taught all the new recruits the ropes of being Brownies while completing their own badge work.

Zungu said she loved showing the new girls how to care and share, which is the Teddy promise.

Chigumba added that new members were welcome at any stage of their the programme and explained that there were four branches which included Teddies starting from four years old and up, Brownies from seven to 10, guides to age 14 and Rangers to age 18. The Guides programme for each age focuses on helping the girls grow into well-rounded individuals who care for others, the earth and living things, while still having fun.
