7-year-old cancer patient needs your help

CRESTA – Two months before her seventh birthday, a little girl was diagnosed with brainstem glioma. Help her family raise funds.

Today (15 September) is her seventh birthday and any child would be very excited for this day, but for Zanerique Toerien from Discovery, this birthday may be even more special as it is a celebration of her life.

Zanerique’s mother, Tersia explained that her daughter’s vision got very bad and she became off-balance. This is when they took her for tests.

On 14 July, Zanerique was diagnosed with brainstem glioma, which is a cancerous tumor on her brain stem. Doctors said that according to statistics, in cases like these, patients only have about six to eight months to live.

Toerien explained that Zanerique has just completed a two-week course of radiation, because an operation can’t be performed.

A concert, 1 Hit Wonders, 7 Decades of the Ultimate 1 Hit Wonders will be held to raise funds in aid of Zanerique. Tersia explained that the funds will be used to have Zanerique visit the Flora Glen Hospital instead of the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital as this is just too far. “We want her to be as comfortable as possible.”

Tersia said that she had to leave her job to become Zanerique’s full-time carer. “She gets tired quite quickly because of the medication that she is on.” She added that this is the last thing that she thought would happen to her child. “I am still in shock.”

“I understand you’re not a cancer parent, so spreading awareness isn’t a priority, but the day before my child’s diagnosis, I wasn’t a cancer parent either.” she said.

The concert will take place at The Barnyard Theatre in Cresta on 5 October at 6.30pm for 8pm. The ticket cost R185. For tickets, contact Carroline Wessels.
