Small child killed in apparent hit-and-run

LANSERIA – A second light motor vehicle apparently swerved to avoid a collision, lost control and came to rest in the ditch.

A young girl, believed to be aged between six and eight-years-old, was killed this morning (7 September) after she was hit by a vehicle on the R512 near Lanseria, north of Johannesburg.

ER24 paramedics, along with other services, arrived on scene at 7.40am and found the body of the child lying next to the road while a light motor vehicle was found lying in a ditch.

Paramedics immediately assessed the patient and found that she had already succumbed to her multiple, fatal injuries.

According to Russel Meiring, ER24 Spokesperson, “Unfortunately, nothing more could be done for the young girl and she was declared dead on scene.”

The child is believed to have been on her way to school when she was hit by a vehicle. This vehicle then apparently fled the scene. A second light motor vehicle apparently swerved to avoid a collision, lost control and came to rest in the ditch.

The driver of the light motor vehicle, a woman, was assessed and found to have sustained only minor injuries. She was treated for her injuries and thereafter transported to Life Fourways Hospital for further treatment.

Local authorities were on scene to investigate further.
