Some pools ready and some not

JOBURG – The City of Johannesburg is set to open some pools in the City, however, some public pools will remain closed due to maintenance work still being completed.

Spring Day, 1 September, heralds the official opening of the City of Johannesburg swimming pools, however, residents in some areas will have to be creative in thinking of ways to cool down as some public pools will not be opening their gates soon.

According to a statement sent by Nthatise Modingoane, the City’s deputy director of communications, a number of swimming pools will remain closed due to both minor and major repairs that are scheduled to take place soon.

“There are pools where contractors have already started maintenance work, therefore, each pool will open as soon as contractors finish the work,” the statement said.

Pools that will be open on, 1 September, include Kensington B, Linden, Newclare, Riverlea, Robin Hills, Roosevelt Park, Vrededorp, Verity Park, Windsor East, Windsor West, Little Falls, Noordgesig, and Linden.

Blairgowrie swimming pool will remain closed for minor repairs but will immediately open on the completion of work.

Those that are scheduled for major repairs that will delay opening due to the amount of work currently taking place include: Brixton, Mayfair, Ochse, Florida North, Senoane, Moletsane, Diepkloof, Meadowlands, Jabavu, Rhodes Park, Malvern, Ellis Park’s baby pool, Pioneer Park’s baby pool, Turffontein, Lenasia Ext 5, Lenasia Ext 10, Lenasia South, Ennerdale Ext 5, Eldorado Park Ext 9, Sydenham, Zoo Lake, Robertsham, Crown Gardens, Southern Suburbs and Orange Farm.

Earlier in the year, Albertskroon residents complained about the state of their pool, and upon further investigation, former Ward 86 councillor Steve Kotzé said not much had been done on the repairs to the pool. “Every time I asked about maintenance and repairs to the pool, I would just get stories, which astounds me because the budget is allocated during the year and the repairs could have been done in July and August,” he said.
