Know what to do during a driveway robbery

JOBURG – Apcan Security group gives tips on how to handle driveway robberies.

After an increase in driveway robberies, Linden Police’s Captain Walter Spencer warned that residents should not try to fight off the robbers. “You must surrender because criminals can shoot you for your car,” he said. He advised that residents reverse into their yards as they would have a clear view driving out. “If possible, keep a panic button on you or let a relative wait at the gate while you drive in or out,” he added.

Apcan Security Group gave tips and advice on what to do when you are arriving or leaving your home, which is one of your most vulnerable points of your day.

“Unfortunately, these robberies have become a reality of everyday life. Follow our basic safety tips on how to avoid a driveway robbery and how to behave when you find yourself a victim of one,” advised Apcan’s Louis Grobler.

Tips:

• Turn off your radio when you are 2km from home so you can be more aware of your environment

• Be familiar with your area, get to know the people who are always around such as the people who sell newspapers on the corner

• If a robber confronts you put up your hands immediately, do not try to grab your bag or cellphone. It may look like you’re reaching for a firearm

• Try to stay calm, listen to the armed robber and obey commands

• Do not look the robber in the eye

• Do not pretend to not have a bag or wallet. If the robber finds out you are lying he might hurt you in anger or out of frustration

• Do not throw your keys away, it will just make your attacker angry

• If you lie face down outside the car he might not force you to get back in.
