Women’s health risks to look out for

JOBURG - Doctor David Mboweni speaks about women's health as Women's month comes to a close.

Women are mothers, sisters, spouses and – as the entire month of August is set aside to celebrate women – what about health issues that affect women daily?

Doctor David Mboweni, whose surgery is in Honeydew, has pointed out specific health issues all women need to be on the lookout for. “There are several issues that women must always watch out for, while at the same time, it is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle,” he said.

Mboweni pointed out cervical cancer as the second-highest killer of women and topping the list was breast cancer. “Cervical cancer is preventable and that’s why women over the age of 25 should have a pap smear, which is a screening procedure for cervical cancer. It tests for the presence of pre-cancerous or cancerous cells on the cervix, the opening of the uterus,” he explained.

He also suggested that women should perform a self-examination of their breasts to check for any lumps that may be present. “Early detection of cancer is key to beating the illness so it’s very important for women to check themselves out, before it is too late,”he warned.

Other illnesses he identified were hypertension and diabetes. “If there’s a family history of hypertension, diabetes or cancer, then, that person is required to be extra vigilant,” he advised.

Mboweni also highlighted the importance of keeping a healthy diet and drinking as much water as possible.
