Vasco da Gama elected the new City’s speaker

Da Gama won the elections with 145 votes beating the African National Congress', Constance Bapela who only acquired 126 votes after robust elections.

The DA’s Vasco Da Gama was elected the new speaker of Johannesburg council despite a disruptive session on 22 August.

The inaugural council meeting held at the Johannesburg City Hall in Braamfontein was marred by scuffles and shouting.

Some EFF councillors openly displayed who they voted for on their ballots papers. The City’s municipal manager, Trevor Fowler announced the elections results not so long ago here in the City’s hall.

Da Gama won the elections with 145 votes beating the African National Congress’, Constance Bapela who only acquired 126 votes after robust elections.

DA leader Mmusi Maimane said today was a historic day and a memorable one for the people of Johannesburg. “The citizens of Johannesburg voted for change and today the change had begun to take effect,” he said.

Mmusi said the results significantly showed how the elections work and the party would work hard to ensure that problems of the people of Johannesburg are addressed. “We are going to bring real change for the people of this City,” he said.
