Randburg receives long-awaited clean-up

RANDBURG CBD – Excessive rubbish, allegedly dumped in notorious hotspots by vagrants, is removed.

City of Johannesburg entities and the Randburg Police embarked on a massive clean-up campaign on 11 August in the Randburg CBD.

Region B Urban Inspection team, Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) workers, City Rangers, Pikitup and Metro Police cleaned up several hotspots, which are usually occupied by vagrants.

The clean-up initially began at Noreen Avenue in Bordeaux North. Authorities cleaned up the rubbish heap, which was dumped in the area and advised homeless people to seek proper accommodation as they were transgressing City bylaws.

Over the past few months Bordeaux residents have been complaining about this notorious hotspot and said it was attracting criminal elements in the suburb.

Randburg Police Sector 1 manager, Constable Vincent Hlungwane, said they then moved to the Randburg CBD on the corner of Pretoria Avenue and Mikro Lane and explained that they removed the rubbish heap to ensure the area was completely clean. “We then moved to the corner of William Nicol Drive and Main Street,” he said.

He concluded, the operation was to ensure that the excessive amounts of rubbish often dumped in those hotspots were minimised.
