UPDATE: JRA to repair the bridge during this financial year

FERNDALE – JRA spokesperson Bertha Peters-Scheepers says the repair of the bridge is earmarked to commence this year.

A bridge at Cork Avenue in Ferndale is on the brink of collapse.

Residents are concerned that it has been more than a year since they reported this problem and nothing has been done to repair the decaying bridge.

This bridge was damaged during the floods at Bryanfern Spruit last year and has now developed cracks and holes.

Bronweyn Craig from the Bryanfern Resident’s Association passes the bridge on a daily basis. She complained that the problem has escalated and should have been addressed a long time ago.

“Only a few weeks left before the rainy season starts and we fear the bridge could collapse,” she said.

Four months ago, Joburg Roads Agency (JRA)  insisted that a preliminary study was done and the report with recommendations was waiting to be approved for the required funding.

It further indicated that when the report was approved, the procurement process would begin, however, no work has begun on the bridge yet.

The entity’s spokesperson, Bertha Peters-Scheepers, told Randburg Sun on 10 August that they have appointed consultants who assessed the damage to Cork Avenue Bridge.

“The detail designs for the repair of bridges are currently being undertaken. The bridge repair has been prioritised and it is envisaged that the repairs will be undertaken in the current financial year ending 30 June 2017,” she said.

She concluded that the repair of the bridge was earmarked to commence this year.
