ELECTIONS: The ANC retains Joburg

JOBURG – The DA puts up a good fight for the City of Johannesburg, but narrowly loses.

The ANC has retained the City of Johannesburg, after a long, rigorous vote capturing process in the 2016 Municipal Elections.

The final result was ANC coming first with 44.55 percent, the DA with 38.37 percent, and EFF with 11.09 percent.

ANC won 121 seats, the DA won 104 seats, and the EFF won 30 seats.

The fight over the City was close, and the ANC and DA both led the race on numerous occasions, although neither held a convincing lead for long.

The struggle for Joburg was almost as hotly-contested as that for the Tshwane Metro, which finished DA 43.11 percent, ANC 41.22 percent and EFF 11.70 percent.

 

UPDATE: 6 August, 6.50pm

With 99 percent of the Joburg ballots counted, the ANC leads with 43.38 percent to the DA’s 39.66 percent and the EFF stands at 10.96 percent.

Joburg voting ballots are still being counted, revealed Mosotho Moepya, Chief Electoral Officer of the IEC, during the election results announcement on 6 August.

The official results for Joburg will be announced once all votes have been captured.

 

UPDATE: 6 August, 9.10am

The ANC took the lead in Joburg overnight, and as at 9.10am on 6 August, it had 42.03 percent of the vote, against the DA’s 41.39 percent – a lead of 0.64 percent.

 

UPDATE: 5 August, 7.48pm

The DA is still in the lead in the City of Johannesburg with 41,85 percent as 78 percent of votes are already captured.

The ANC is running hot on their heels with 41.57 percent of captured votes.

The EFF already gained 10.52 percent support.

There are talks of a coalition between political parties across the country and especially in the hotly contested metros like the City.

About 1,8 million votes have been captured in the City thus far.

The IEC said results of outstanding councils will be known this evening. Political parties had until 5pm today to submit objections, of which the IEC said there are 49.

IEC Chairperson Glen Mashinini said results will only be finalised after the objection process is complete.

 

UPDATE: 5 August, 1.12pm

The DA has once again jumped ahead in the City of Johannesburg with 41.85 percent of captured votes in their favour.

The ANC is running close behind with 41.6 percent.

The EFF has 10.64% of the captured votes.

As of 1pm, 42 hours after most voting stations closed on election day, these were the results from the about 1,6 million votes that have been captured in the City.

INITIAL REPORT: 10am

The City of Johannesburg’ fate is still too close to call a the ANC jumped in the lead early this morning.

ANC now leads with 44,93 percent of votes captured with the DA following with a close 38,69 percent and the EFF with 10,97 percent.

The IEC is still capturing the City’s votes and it is expected that a clearer picture may form at noon. The IEC said on Twitter last night that as results nationally are at 85 percent captured, updates will trickle far more slowly.

This morning, 91 percent of votes had been captured countrywide with 33 percent of Gauteng municipalities captured.

These results are not final and not all voting station’s results have been captured in each ward.

The IEC will, in terms of the Electoral Commission Act, declare results within seven days after the elections.
