Illegal dumpers caught on Republic Road

BORDEAUX – Illegal dumping in Bordeaux frustrates residents.

A motorist who was caught illegally dumping rubble at the Eskom servitude along Republic Road was fined R2 500 by Metro Police.

The motorist and his two accomplices were discovered by a resident, Ilan Bodinger, who was passing by and notified the authorities.

Ilan approached the illegal dumpers who insisted that the place was a dumping site. The concerned resident then alerted private security companies in the area as well as the police and Metro Police.

Chairperson of the Bordeaux South Resident’s Association (BSRA), Elinor Bodinger said that the culprits initially tried to dump the rubble in Riverside Drive in Bordeaux until one resident stopped them. They then drove to the Republic Road where Ilan stopped them

“Ilan drove past and saw them so he blocked their exit and told them they were illegally dumping. He called me and I called the police who were busy and could not attend. Metro Police attended to the matter 20 minutes later,” she said.

CSS and Ghost Tactical security companies were also at the scene to provide support to the resident.

“Residents are tired of the ongoing problem of dumping. It is advisable for them to notify their security companies first and then police while security companies are on site,” concluded Elinor.

Ward 102 councillor David Potter complimented the resident’s Whatsapp group as the message was escalated swiftly.

“This servitude has been an issue for a number of years. City Power installed a barrier a few years ago along the stretch to prevent illegal dumping, but left a small gate to allow one vehicle in,” he said.

Access for one vehicle was allowed onto the servitude for grass cutting to take place, Eskom to service their oil-filled cables laid under the servitude as well as for the use of emergency vehicles.

“Two bundles of barbed wire have also been placed at the entrance to prevent illegal access and further illegal dumping,” he concluded.
