IEC ready for 26 million voters

PRETORIA – The Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa IEC) launched its National Results Operations centre where all the votes that will be cast and tallied during the upcoming municipal elections, will be verified .

CEO of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) Mosotho Moepya said that the IEC has done everything possible to ensure that all goes well with this election and that now it is in the hands of South Africans.

“We have 26.3 million registered voters that we expect to visit the polls next week and this is our biggest number of voters yet. We are confident that we will set a new record of voters going to cast their votes this year,” Moepya said.

He pointed out that the IEC has worked tirelessly to ensure outstanding addresses were captured and added that the 4 million outstanding addresses would be captured when those voters cast their votes next week.

“In the last municipal elections there was a 57 percent turn-out of voters but we are confident that this year that will change as we have rigorously campaigned via social media platforms, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram as well as on email,” Moepya said.

Independent Electoral Commission’s chairman, Glen Mashinini, spoke about the integrity of the IEC as it heads into the elections saying that the voting systems must remain transparent. “Rigorous checks, oversights, and balances have been put in place to ensure the optimum integrity of the upcoming elections. What must come in must come out,”he said.

He warned voters to refrain from violence during the elections as each situation would be dealt with as they arise.

Mashini added that it did not bring joy to the IEC to have to disqualify the National Freedom Party (NFP) but the IEC was mandated by the Constitution and had to follow acts as prescribed.

“Whatever the outcomes of the court, we urge all to accept the ruling,” he said.
